With a multitude of opportunities for passive and active recreation, Riverside County Park offers something for everyone to enjoy. The amenities in Riverside County Park range from ball fields and tennis courts to picnic areas and walking paths, to a state-of-the-art rowing center and amphitheater.

About the Project

The Bergen County Rowing Center is a two-story multipurpose boat house building that was constructed on the grounds of Riverside County Park. The park stretches some 85 acres along the Passaic River in the municipalities of Lyndhurst and North Arlington in Bergen County, New Jersey. The boat house building was designed as a venue for the advancement of rowing and paddle sports on an amateur, high school, and collegiate scale. It provides indoor storage for sculls and equipment on the first floor, and indoor training facilities, bathrooms and showers, locker rooms, and a meeting space on the second floor. The new boat house supplements the existing 2,600 sf, one-story rowing center building in addition to the recently completed in-water improvements that consist of piers, gangways, and floating docks off the Passaic River. In addition to constructing the new building, the scope called to restore the existing boathouse storage facility, remove site fences, storm utilities, relocate existing boat storage sheds, new utilities routed from Riverside Avenue and from other structures within Riverside County Park.

The new park amenities project consisted of constructing a new amphitheater with a comfort station facility and a maintenance garage utilizing concrete and structural glue laminate timber. The amphitheater was designed to work with the natural grading of the park, seamlessly integrated into the landscape. The comfort station has a cutting-edge design with curved lines and stone to give the bathroom facility a unique façade. The new facilities include walkways, benches, a paved pedestrian plaza, landscaping, and lighting.

Outcome

This capital improvement project serves a diverse range of community needs. The objective was for the facility to provide convenience and accessibility for everyone visiting Riverside County Park and to impact the community for decades to come.
