Overview

LiRo prepared a master plan, developed design documents, and provided construction inspection services, for the renovation of this early 20th century park. The design goal was integration of the circulation path and design aesthetic with the adjacent historic Oyster Bay commercial district.

About the Project

Consisting of a formal landscape plan leading visitors to vistas of the bay, the original Memorial Area landscape plan had been compromised over decades with the removal of some walkways, the decline of trees and the addition of several utility buildings of incompatible design. The design scope for this area included new walkways, period lighting, and selective tree removal and planting to restore the intent of the original plan. Building facades were renovated and rooflines rebuilt to complement nearby architectural styles.

Project Challenges & Solutions

Original playing fields were prone to flood due to their proximity to the bay. A new elevated synthetic turf soccer field accommodates storm-water leaching chambers below. Drainage improvements, storm water runoff mitigation measures, and parking modifications were incorporated into the design. Deterioration of the granite seawall facing Oyster Bay created voids behind the wall and below the paved plaza above. A new reinforced fiberglass cantilevered bulkhead behind the wall was installed, and face stones were reset in conformance with the original design.
