Overview
LiRo-Hill provided full structural engineering design and construction oversight for the renovation of the North Edison Branch of the Edison Public Library located at 777 Grove Avenue in Edison. The existing building is a 1-story library of approx. 18,500 sf. The renovation added approx. 10,000 sf of new programming, exhibit, and reading space by adding three separate 1-story extensions at different corners of the existing structure.
About the Project
LiRo-Hill’s scope included exploration of the existing foundations via test pits to understand the interaction between new and existing construction. Structural design of the new concrete foundation included retaining walls, footings, exterior stairs, and concrete slabs, and the aboveground superstructure was designed using steel columns and beams with metal deck roofing. A new entrance canopy was designed, as well as modifications to the existing structure, such as new wall openings and infills, and local replacement of slabs on grade that had experienced settlement. LiRo-Hill provided construction phase support services, including review and coordination of structural RFIs, submittals, and project meetings.
Project Challenges & Solutions
The existing soil conditions on site provided challenges, and LiRo-Hill was able to address the issue with soil replacement where needed, or concrete framed slabs to bypass poor soil to avoid extensive excavation and soil backfill. Limited available information about the existing structural lateral system informed design decisions to make the new additions structurally independent for resisting code prescribed wind and seismic lateral forces, via expansion joints and moment frames. Cross coordination with the architectural, MEP, contractor, and owner’s representative at regular construction meetings was crucial to resolve site conditions or other construction coordination in a timely manner.
